Progress is slow but sure this week. The new stone is looking wonderful and we finally have the last piece of fence in between us and number 49.
The heat pump manifolds are going to need serious attention so I've asked Matt the plumber to pop over this weekend to help out, plus he can take a look at plumbing in the rainwater feed to the back of the vegetable beds.
A diary of my attempts to build a new house in Wicken, Cambridgeshire. How hard can it be?

Day 5 - Sandstone looking good
The sandstone has started to go down over the last few days, although we have been hampered a bit by the weather - high winds and driving rain on and off. To be expected really given the time of year.
The guys have done a superb job so far and the variation and fossils in the stone look great. They should weather down really well.
As soon as they have pointed up the stone in the back corner I'll get the shed ordered up. I'll be planting a few more trees this weekend and taking a look at the GSHP manifolds to see if I can lower them into the ground or if I'll neet to get Matt the plumber out for some more drastic surgery.

Day 3 - Sandstone arrives

Day 2 - Weed clearance and stone delivery
The ground workers have started on site today, although there was little they could do as the weather has been foul.
We found some root-ball privet going for a good price at the local garden centre on Sunday so we bought a batch to form the hedge behind the house. These arrived today by delivery, and we also got a viburnum and four box bushes too.
Bannold delivered the first of the stone today but forgot the main slabs so they'll be on their way to us first thing tomorrow. We have the kerb stones that will be used to edge all the beds to the front of the house and the black limestone sets that will form the path round the garden and the circular patio under the pergola.
The ground workers cleared the main garden of weeds today and scraped back the hard core ready for laying once the weather improves.
We've hit our first snag - the ground source heat pump manifold will need to be dropped down to accomodate the level of the path, but it's probably going to need some attention from my plumber to do so. Better not get that wrong else that's no hot water or heating!

Day 1 - Trees and clean up
This weekend is clear-up central, getting everything ready for the ground workers to start tomorrow. We've also had our trees delivered last Friday by Barchams so we'll make a start on planting them up today.
We have tulip trees for the driveway, a magnolia for the bed on the north-east corner, a mix of sorbus and cherry for the border with the bungalow and an amelanchier to sit by the back fence between the pergola and the patio.

Garden Kick-off
Well the cat happened, the kids, dogs and Caterham are still on the to-do list, so that just leaves the garden. Better crack on then!
Last year we had some plans drawn up by a professional designer to give us guide and after a few months of planning and supplier selection we're now ready to kick off.
We're planning on taking down the big norway spruce in the driveway, but because we're in a conservation area and it is over a certain size, we'll need to get planning permission to do so. The application is in but we'll have to wait six weeks to find out if we're allowed to go ahead.
We have a local groundworker from the village that's taken on the challenge of laying the paving and we've selected some nice sandstone slabs and limestone sets which will be delivered early this week.
Martha and I will be doing all of the planting ourselves (well, Martha will be doing the clever bit of deciding what to plant where, I'm there for the lifting and digging), and I'm going to be dusting off the old tool belt to build the pergola, shed and raised vegetable beds.
Watch this space!
