The Beginning

Welcome to my house building blog!

My wife Martha and I are about to begin a project that we have been planning for over 18 months; to build a new house, from scratch.

We've had our plot in Wicken, Cambridgeshire for over a year now. Neither of us have any experience in building, but being slightly dim I have taken the decision to project manage the build myself.

What we should end up with (provided I don't stuff it up) is a 4 bedroom, detatched Queen Anne style house based on the Rectory range from timber frame manufacturer, Potton.

We're hoping to make the most of starting from the plans up by building in lots of new, green gizmos, including:

  • A Ground Source Heat Pump for all our hot water

  • A Rain Water Harvester connected to all of our gutters which allows us to use recycled rain water to run our toilets, washing machine and garden taps

  • Warm-water Underfloor Heating working well with the heat pump and keeping the house nice and snug

  • Heat Recovery Ventilation which takes the warm, stale air from the bathrooms and kitchens and uses it to heat cold, fresh air pumped into the living spaces

How hard can it be?

I'm about to find out.
